Facts about the challenge from Boligbyggeri fra 4 til 1 Planet to contractors and developers:

The applications will be divided into three categories of contractor:

  • Example building projects for private contractors - blocks of flats and terraced homes.
  • Example building projects for social housing organisations - blocks of flats and terraced homes.
  • Example building projects for house builders - single-family or cluster homes.

The individual types of housing have not been sharply defined as the Boligbyggeri fra 4 til 1 Planet initiative aims to allow space for idea development.

The Boligbyggeri fra 4 til 1 Planet initiative has a great opportunity for financial support for Denmark’s most progressive contractors and developers, who will help set new standards for the climate footprint of the building sector.

Building attractive homes with a climate footprint of just one-quarter of today’s norm is no easy matter. Nevertheless, that is what the Boligbyggeri fra 4 til 1 Planet initiative is aiming to get ambitious contractors and developers to do. VILLUM FONDEN and the philanthropic association Realdania are behind the initiative.

The challenge is to show how Denmark can build homes with a climate impact of only 2.5 kg CO2 per m2 per year. This is so challenging that the initiative is ready to support contractors and developers who will finance, develop and build example buildings that not only have a significantly lower climate footprint, but are also scalable. Construction projects that can inspire the rest of the sector to move towards a greener world.

Boligbyggeri fra 4 til 1 Planet has earmarked funds for development activities around the example buildings. The example project with the lowest documented climate footprint will be awarded a prize.

“It’s a huge task, and neither owners, developers, consultants nor construction companies can do the job alone. It requires both development and innovation from the individual contractor. Collaboration and knowledge-sharing between the projects are also important, so that the experience gained from individual projects gets out to the rest of the construction sector as soon as possible,” says Stig Hessellund, the project manager at Realdania.

Michael K. Rasmussen, project manager on behalf of VILLUM FONDEN adds:

"If we are to achieve our goal of a 75% reduction in climate footprint, we’ll need bold and visionary contractors and developers to help find solutions. We believe that there are contractors out there who are ready to put their mark on the housing of the future. And we hope that as many of them as possible will join the initiative,” said Michael K. Rasmussen.
